About the Season
The St. Louis Chamber Chorus’ 2010-2011 season will continue a unique tradition of exploring and celebrating the ethnic diversity and architectural legacy of St. Louis through six programs of outstanding choral music. The Chamber Chorus is itinerant, matching its programs to venues throughout the city and county. Next season, with the theme Progressions ~ Transitions, the Chorus examines the ways in which particular works have influenced later composers. At each concert, the audience will be introduced to a major work in an appropriate musical context, and then invited to consider how subsequent composers have reinterpreted it.

The Progressions series is very much a collaborative effort, building upon relationships that the Chorus has nurtured with local universities and other artists. In addition to the customary demands upon our musicians, these concerts require commissions from composers both close to home and internationally, along with reconstructions by musical scholars of distinction. Demonstrating the immense breadth of choral music, this season’s repertoire ranges from ancient Greek tragedy to contemporary Scandinavian composition, and including a remarkable array of languages, from Hebrew to Hungarian, Latin to Italian, and much more. Repertoire highlights of the 2010-2011 season include:

Theatrical choruses by Granville Bantock & Andrea Gabrieli
Romantic lieder by Brahms & Liszt, Peter Cornelius & Gustav Mahler
English partsongs by Herbert Howells, Hubert Parry & Vaughan Williams
American masterworks by William Billings, Ned Rorem & Virgil Thomson
Reconstructed & elaborated motets by Gesualdo, Praetorius and Purcell
World premieres from Peter Aston, Judith Bingham & Clare Maclean
