“The St. Louis Chamber
Chorus can, it seems, take on just about anything you’d care to name in the way of unaccompanied choral singing, and do it well.” –Sarah Bryan Miller, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Overview |

The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus explores and celebrates the ethnic diversity and architechtural legacy of St. Louis through six programs of outstanding choral music under the direction of Philip Barnes, who is beginning his twenty-second year as Artistic Director. Unlike any other choir in the region, the Chamber Chorus is “itinerant,“ taking its performances to buildings throughout the greather St. Louis area. Each concert is tailored to its surroundings and offers the audience a unique opportunity to explore visually and acoustically six diverse settings. Thus, the choice of venue matches both the repertoire and thrust of the program, and also serves to highlight the architectural jewels in our midst. All performances are on Sunday afternoons, commencing at 3:00 p.m. We welcome listeners from any background, discriminating against no one. The only restriction placed upon our audience is that we do not invite very young children (aged five years and below) to join us, as much for their own comfort as our need for a controlled environment: choral music can be very quiet indeed! Our 56th season, Tributes, blends the grand with the intimate with true 'chamber' music where the audience is invited to witness music at close quarters, as well as large scale works presented in some of the city's more majestic spaces. In a musical odyssey the singers celebrate the Latvian capital in the Missa Rigensis, a major work by pop performer turned classic composer, Ugis Praulins; they conjure up Alpine vistas in the music of Judith Bingham; and they invoke Haiti in a world premiere from Sydney Guillaume. This is but one of several notable commissions this season, including Songs of Ale from Robert Walker, who will travel from his home in England for our performance at the Schlafly Tap Room. Another British composer, Sasha Johnson Manning. provides the 'new piece' for our recreation of the Nine Lessons and Carols associated with King's College, Cambridge. A successor to Sasha as our 'Composer-in-Residence', Yakov Gubanov is writing a homage to his Russian homeland for our season finale, a series of tributes to fallen leaders and their heirs, from Tsar Nicholas II to President Kennedy.
