While the pairing of choir and guitars might not seem a natural one, this program will certainly demonstrate the versatility of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus. In a partnership ideal for a season titled Collaborations II, the Chorus will be joined by the celebrated Hanser McClellan guitar duo, which has been thrilling audiences across the country since 1996.

Though unusual, the mix of guitars and choir has interested a number of great composers. Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco form the heart of this program. Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 is one of the most haunting and recognized works by Brazil’s best known composer. It will be performed to an arrangement by Bob Chilcott, formerly of the King’s Singers. Chilcott’s arrangement will be receiving its U.S. premiere at this concert.

Castelnuovo-Tedesco, whose fame seems inextricably connected to the guitar, marries his music to the poetry of Spain’s Federico Garcia Lorca in a cycle of Spanish songs, Romancero Gitano. In the music and words, the audience will feel the passion of Spain, its people and customs. Additionally the Chamber Chorus will perform songs in praise of stringed instruments by Zoltan Kodaly and Sasha Johnson Manning, lute songs full of wit by John Dowland and, from Franz Schubert, Romantic lieder for guitar and men’s voices.

The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus is supported in part by the Missouri Arts Council, the Regional Arts Commission and the Arts and Education Council.
